In 1997, David Sturm worked more than 80 hours a week as a professional chef. He rarely had time to see his wife, Alison, and his daughters. Another thing bothered him – an itch for work he did as a teenager. “My father and I remodeled old Victorian homes, and I just loved it,” Sturm says.

Unable to fight the itch, he founded Attention to Detail Home Remodeling that same year. Aside from working with his father, as a young man Sturm also worked for a company that didn’t pay enough attention to quality, shaping his new company’s core belief. “I worked at a local construction company that cut corners, and I wanted to start a company that really paid attention to detail,” Sturm says.

Member Debbie Bethea of Marietta [Ga.] says the remodel of her basement delivered a prime example of the company’s signature phrase. “They are kind of like their name,” she says. “They’re really good about the little things.”

Sturm says part of the reason for the company’s continued success is constant contact with the client. “From regularly scheduled meetings with the clients to in-house journals that are checked every day, strong communication is very important to us,” he says.

As a new homeowner, member Jordan Rose of Tucker [Ga.] was looking for a contractor who would listen on a bathroom remodel. Attention to Detail did exactly that. “After meeting them, I knew I could rely on them for honest communication with us,” he says. “I was nervous as this was my first time ever remodeling, but David was very good at explaining the process and walking me through it.”

Sturm emphasizes the use of quality products during remodeling projects. “It’s just like when you cook a dish – it’ll only turn out as good as the products you’re using.”

He hasn’t completely abandoned his cooking – Sturm makes barbecue at an appreciation party for their subcontractors every year.
